Kuri(chestnut) Anmitsu at Kinozen Sweetshop in Kagurazaka

Anmitsu is the one of my favorite Japanese sweet and I think the one you can have at Kinozen Sweetshop in Kagurazaka is one of the best as far as I consider. Anmitsu is a traditional Japanese dessert that has been popular for many centuries. It is made of small cubes of agar, a white translucent jelly made from seaweed, served in a bowl with sweet azuki bean paste or anko (the an part of anmitsu), boiled beans, and a variety of fruits. The fruits include melon slices, preserved oranges, pieces of pineapples, canned fruit, and strawberries although it may vary from season to season, depending on availability. The anmitsu usually comes with a small pot of sweet black syrup, or mitsu (the mitsu part of anmitsu) which one pours onto the jelly before eating. Anmitsu is usually eaten with a spoon and fork.

A few variations on this dessert exist. Mitsumame is anmitsu without bean paste, the mame meaning the beans that are served with the syrup(it's laid next to the bowl in the picture above) and anko instead. Cream anmitsu is anmitsu with ice cream on top. Nata de coco or shiratama dango are also commonly used as toppings. Anmitsu is a cold dessert, so it is often eaten on a hot summer day.

The topping of Kuri(chestnuts) is favored during Autumn season(Sep to Nov) and it is often used for desserts like cakes(we call it Mon't Blanc Cake) and Parfait.
